Calif. Drops Bill to Allow Students to Sleep in Cars on Campus

Inside Higher Ed

California’s Legislature appears to have dropped a bill that would have required the state’s 115 community colleges to allow homeless students to sleep overnight in their cars in campus parking lots, The Mercury News reported. A few years ago, the state passed a law requiring colleges to give homeless students access to shower facilities, and the lawmaker who championed the parking lot bill called it a logical next step. But a Senate committee weakened the proposal, which now appears to be dead for this year.
