Kaplan Buys Coding School for Aspiring Software Developers

06/26/2014

The Chronicle of Higher Education. June 25, 2014.

Kaplan Inc. announced on Wednesday that it had acquired Dev Bootcamp, which offers nine-week courses to students who are seeking to learn software development. Jonathan Stowe, Dev Bootcamp’s president, told The Wall Street Journal that the school has had about 600 graduates since 2012 and is profitable. Tuition for the nine-week course is $12,200. The purchase price of the deal was not disclosed.

Wednesday’s deal fits into for-profit educators’ desire to invest in more high-end vocational training in areas where employer demand is strong, said Trace Urdan, a senior analyst at Wells Fargo WFC +0.13% who follows the education sector. “In the future, the for-profit schools will have to get a lot closer to employers because they really have to come through on the promise of helping students improve their job prospects.”

Kaplan approached Dev Bootcamp in 2013, and the parties began more serious discussions earlier this year, Mr. Stowe said.

The deal will allow Dev Bootcamp to expand further in the U.S. and possibly overseas, he added.
