U.S. Approves Plan to Continue Accreditation of CC of San Francisco

06/24/2014

The Chronicle of Higher Education. June 23, 2014.

The U.S. Department of Education on Friday approved a plan that will give the embattled City College of San Francisco two years to satisfy its accreditor and keep its doors open, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges announced on June 11 a change in its rules that would allow City College to keep its accreditation if it fixed the problems that threaten its future. The change was subject to federal approval.

The accrediting group and the college had been locked in a prolonged battle over the institution’s fate. The announcement of the new rule followed protests against the accreditor by higher-education leaders in the state and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, among others.
