Veterans Affairs Dept. Trademarks ‘GI Bill’

12/06/2012

The Chronicle of Higher Education - December 6, 2012

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said this week that it had registered “GI Bill” as a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, following a request this past spring from a group of 14 Democratic senators who said doing so would help protect veterans from the deceptive marketing of college programs. The senators said the trademark would prevent the term from being used in advertising that enticed veterans to enroll without delivering on the marketers’ promises. In June, 20 state attorneys general reached a settlement with an online marketer whose Web sites were accused of taking advantage of veterans by falsely implying that the sites were endorsed or operated by the federal government.
