Accreditor Threatens 10 Colleges Owned by Career Education Corp.

The Chronicle of Higher Education - June 13, 2012

The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges has demanded that 10 institutions operated by the Career Education Corporation “show cause”—i.e., justify—why their accreditation should not be revoked, the company has disclosed in filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The inquiry comes after another accreditor, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, last month removed a similar order issued in November regarding faulty job-placement reports at 49 of the company’s health and art-and-design colleges. Nine of the 10 institutions affected by the new order are accredited by both agencies, according to the company, which owns more than 90 for-profit colleges worldwide.
