Chancellor’s Office Says Santa Monica College’s 2-Tier Pricing Plan Is Illegal

04/18/2012

The Chronicle of Higher Education - April 18, 2012

The two-tier-pricing plan that Santa Monica College recently backed away from would be illegal under the California Education Code, according to officials in the office of the state’s community-college chancellor, Jack Scott. But The Santa Monica Daily Press reports that administrators at the college are waiting for a formal legal opinion from the state’s attorney general. “Until we receive such an opinion, it is clearly difficult to make any comments,” a spokesman for the college said. At issue is whether the college could get around state tuition limits by creating a new nonprofit organization that would offer the higher-priced courses to the public and then contract with the college to provide them.
